It was cold again and there had been rain, but it had abated to a gentle drizzle and the droplets that found Elanor Matrill's face felt like the playful and loving caresses of her mother. Besides, even if the sky had opened up and drenched her with a deluge, it could not have dampened Elanor's soaring spirits. There was beauty all around her and she meant to enjoy it. Despite the chill, it was spring and grounds of the school were green with bright new foliage. There were puddles in the fields she crossed, crystal clear like fine mirrors reflecting the clouds and trees overhead, except they danced with ringlets as the drizzle drops found them. The sky itself was ragged with gray and black clouds that raced by, but in Elanor's euphoric state, it felt exciting and dramatic, as if she were framed in a living picture or was the subject of a stirring bard's tale.
Elanor suddenly laughed and felt silly for she was doing nothing more than crossing the fields of Magestar, making for the tall brick administration building. She had not defeated some great foe, she had only passed her examinations.
Then the clouds parted and a silver ray of sunlight rained down on her. A remembrance came to her then and the voice of her mother echoed in her mind.
"Child, we are the lowest of the low. I am a whore and you are a whore's daughter. Despite that, we are still entitled to our fair share of happiness. It might be harder to find for the likes of you and me, but I can guarantee you we shall treasure it all the more and that will make us richer than the folk who find no joy in what they have and what they are, though they might have all the jewels in the world."
Her laugh turned into a sad tremulous smile and her eyes glimmered like the puddles she passed. She still missed her mother dearly, but she was going to heed her mother's advice and savor the joy she had found. Her life had greatly improved. For the past few years, she had a comfortable place to live and a comfortable income to live off of. She had been confirmed in the Faith of Lum, honoring the teachings of her mentor Dame Edna. What's more, she had received a Fellowship education, learning to use and defend herself from magic as well as learning to wield her dagger more adeptly. Elanor felt she was on the verge of a brave new life that she would shape with her own hands.
