Lycanthropy

So what is the story with Lycanthropy? I wanted to tie it to druidic powers in some fashion. Lycanthropy is a disease transmitted by blood. Thus one possibly explanation is that Lycanthropes were druids using their animal shape shifting powers who were then infected with rabies.

Another option would be for Lycanthropy to be a conceited quest by some druids for life eternal. It would be similar to Aritoth's quest for immortality through necromancy through Vampirism.
