The Darkheart Mountains are a formidable range of mountains which divides Northeastern Britannia from the rest of the continent. It lies east of the High Steppes and West of the Bloody Plains, encompassing Cove and the Compassion Shrine. It as so named because of an ancient and foreboding keep, called Stonegate, which lies deep in the heart of the mountains. The keep was an ancient bastion of Eritoth El'Bashir's forces in their wars against the priests of virtue. The keep never fell and remained an evil place, thus earning the mountain range its name.

The Darkheart Mountains are populated by all manner of non-human tribes as well as wild mountain clansmen. Recently, Baisor Deathgrin, the current lord of Stonegate, has conquered and united these disparate and warring groups into a single army under the command of the Shadowlords. This army was responsible for laying siege to the Shrine of Compassion at the direction of the Shadowlord Astaroth.

Although largely wild, the Britannian government has tamed one stretch of the mountains and that is the Middlespan pass which traverses the mountains at the head of the Valley of the Dead.
